Canadian miner Eldorado Gold has placed an order worth about SEK 160 million ($17 million) for additional battery-electric mining equipment from Sandvik, as it moves to further reduce emissions at its underground operations.
The order, placed late last year, covers ten electric mining assets and follows Eldorado Gold’s initial purchase of two battery-electric haul trucks from Sandvik in 2024. The expanded order brings the miner’s planned electric fleet to a total of 12 units, reflecting satisfaction with the performance of the earlier deliveries, Sandvik said.

“Sandvik BEVs have proven their capability underground at Lamaque, and this order confirms the strength of our battery-electric offering,” said Mats Eriksson, president of Sandvik’s mining business area. “We are proud to expand our partnership with Eldorado Gold and support their strategy to strengthen efficiency, safety and sustainability in their mining operations.”

Eldorado Gold plans to deploy the new equipment at its Lamaque gold mine in Val-d’Or, Quebec, starting in 2026, with final deliveries expected in early 2027. The companies have not disclosed the specific models included in the order, but Sandvik’s electric haul trucks are designed to match the payload and productivity of diesel-powered alternatives while reducing noise, heat and exhaust emissions underground.

Mining companies globally are increasingly turning to battery-electric equipment as part of broader decarbonization strategies, particularly in underground operations where ventilation costs and worker exposure to diesel emissions are significant concerns.
