Leapmotor launched its new Lafa 5 electric hatchback in China on Thursday, entering the fast-growing compact EV segment with a limited-time starting price of 92,800 yuan ($13,100), the company said.
The introductory price reflects a cut of 13,000 yuan, or about 12%, from the pre-sales price of 105,800 yuan, with deliveries set to begin shortly. The model is positioned to compete with vehicles including the Volkswagen ID.3, SAIC’s MG4, BYD’s Dolphin and Nio’s Firefly EV, as competition intensifies in China’s mass-market electric car segment.

Leapmotor is offering five versions of the Lafa 5, with CLTC driving ranges of either 515 km or 605 km. Official list prices range from 97,800 yuan to 121,800 yuan, though time-limited cash incentives of up to 7,000 yuan further reduce effective entry pricing. The company also plans to introduce a higher-spec Lafa 5 Ultra version next year.
The compact hatchback is described as a “sporty rear-wheel-drive compact EV tuned by Stellantis’ European team,” according to the launch briefing. Built on Leapmotor’s LEAP 3.5 B platform, the Lafa 5 measures 4,430 mm in length with a 2,735 mm wheelbase, making it larger than Nio’s Firefly EV.

It uses lithium iron phosphate batteries with capacities of 56.2 kWh and 67.1 kWh, supports fast charging, and offers peak motor outputs of either 132 kW or 160 kW depending on the variant.
The Lafa 5 is equipped with Leapmotor’s Pilot driver-assistance system, while the top-end Max variants add LiDAR. The in-car system runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8155P or the newer 8295P chip.
