To achieve the target of producing millions of electric vehicles by 2030, Honda will develop three new dedicated platforms for electric vehicles. One of these platforms will be co-developed with General Motors.
Honda’s Global Electrification Head Shinji Aoyama said that Honda will introduce mini electric commercial vehicles in Japan in 2024. The mini electric commercial vehicles are built on a new vehicle platform.
After that it will launch a full-size electric model in North America in 2026 using a new, larger platform.
The third platform, described as “medium size”, will be built with General Motors from 2027. The announcement of the joint development of the platform itself was made in early April.
GM is currently building two premium electric SUVs for Honda in North America starting in 2024 using an electric vehicle platform based on the Cadillac Lyriq.
Honda is said to be using the next generation Ultium battery from GM, although the specifications are not yet final.
Honda said it plans to build two million electric vehicles globally by 2030, including a midsize model co-developed with GM.
Honda targets North American production of 750,000-800,000 electric vehicles by 2030. The same number is targeted for the Chinese market. Meanwhile, the domestic market in Japan and other markets received 400,000-500,000 units.
