Thomas Built Buses, a subsidiary of Daimler Truck North America, will introduce its first all-electric Type D school bus, the Saf-T-Liner eHDX2 “Wattson,” with orders opening by the end of 2025 and initial deliveries expected in late 2026. The launch marks a key step in the company’s shift toward full-scale electrification of school transportation.
Built on the company’s HDX2 platform, the Wattson features a 246 kWh battery that provides up to 150 miles of range. The bus supports standard SAE CCS1 DC fast charging at 60 kW or higher, allowing for a full charge in about two to three hours. Additional options include a V2G-capable charging system and an onboard 20 kW AC/DC charger. The vehicle delivers 295 horsepower and 750 lb-ft of torque through a two-speed transmission.

The model is powered by Accelera’s 14Xe electric axle, also used in the Jouley Gen 2 bus. The e-axle integrates the motor, gearbox, and power electronics into a single compact unit, designed to improve drivability, reduce mechanical complexity, and lower maintenance requirements.
As a Type D or transit-style bus, the Saf-T-Liner eHDX2 Wattson is the largest configuration in the segment, offering a flat front, high seating capacity, and enhanced driver visibility for urban and suburban routes. Key features include a 277-inch wheelbase, an LCD instrument cluster with real-time diagnostics, and optional 69-inch pass-through luggage compartments. Rear charging is standard, with a front-charging option available.

“Wattson represents our next step in electrification,” said T.J. Reed, president and CEO of Daimler Truck Specialty Vehicles. “We know electrification can feel like a big step. With Wattson, we’re making that step easier by giving districts a familiar Type D solution they already trust – now in electric.”
Jeff Allen, senior vice president of operations and specialty vehicles at Daimler Truck North America, added: “Wattson showcases the strength of Daimler Truck Specialty Vehicles, bringing together proven manufacturing, operational excellence and deep customer insights to deliver the right solutions at the right time.”
Based in High Point, North Carolina, Thomas Built Buses joins Daimler Truck’s other North American brands such as Freightliner and Western Star. The introduction of the eHDX2 Wattson extends Daimler’s electric portfolio into the full-size school bus market, offering districts a durable and fleet-ready zero-emission option.
