Nio’s budget sub-brand Firefly has introduced a new limited-edition version of its only current model, the Firefly EV, as part of efforts to sustain market momentum amid fierce competition in China’s electric vehicle (EV) sector.
The new variant, called the Night Creature Special Edition, is priced at RMB 136,800 ($19,170) including the battery pack, with deliveries set to begin on October 23, the company said. Under Nio’s Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) plan, the vehicle starts at RMB 96,800, accompanied by a monthly battery rental fee of RMB 399.

The Night Creature Special Edition features a distinctive black exterior with white decals and alloy wheels, an exclusive g-force handling kit with red high-stiffness springs for enhanced driving precision, and an NFC key card that illuminates the logo when unlocking the vehicle. The edition follows Firefly’s earlier Nomadic Maillard Special Edition, launched on August 25, which sold all 333 units within 30 hours.
Firefly, which launched its first EV on April 19 with deliveries starting ten days later, continues to rely on its sole model to drive growth. The sub-brand delivered a record 5,775 vehicles in September, up 32.9% from August, according to company data. Nio said during its September 2 earnings call that Firefly would not launch a second model before 2026, but production capacity is expected to reach up to 6,000 units per month in the fourth quarter.

By introducing design-focused limited editions, Firefly aims to sustain consumer interest and strengthen brand recognition while minimizing marketing costs — a strategy increasingly common among EV startups competing for attention in China’s crowded market.
