Xpeng is preparing to launch an extended-range version of its P7+ sedan next year, marking another step in the company’s expansion into the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) market, Chinese media outlet Cailian reported on Thursday.
The upcoming P7+ EREV is expected to feature a battery capable of 5C fast charging and deliver a pure electric range of about 400 kilometers. The move aligns with Xpeng’s strategy to offer both battery electric and extended-range powertrains for future models, which will also be rolled out to global markets.
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) recently disclosed regulatory filings for an EREV variant of Xpeng’s G7 SUV, following a similar filing for its X9 multi-purpose vehicle last month. The G7, launched in July, is equipped with the company’s in-house developed Turing AI smart driving chip, providing up to 2,250 TOPS of computing power. Its battery electric variant starts at RMB 195,800 ($27,490) with a CLTC range of 602 to 702 kilometers.
Xpeng, founded in 2014, initially focused solely on battery electric vehicles, but has shifted strategy as EREVs gained popularity in China. In November 2024, the company unveiled its Kunpeng Super Electric System, which it said could deliver a combined driving range of up to 1,400 kilometers, including 430 kilometers on battery power alone.
The company has filed multiple extended-range models in recent months, including the X9 and G7, and a hybrid variant of its G6 SUV was spotted in July. Reports earlier this year suggested Xpeng is planning at least five EREV models, spanning sedans and SUVs, as it looks to broaden its customer base.
