Chinese automaker GAC on Tuesday announced the European market debut of its Aion V electric SUV at the IAA Mobility show, marking the company’s first global model. Prices start at €35,990, with initial sales set to begin later this month in countries including Poland, Portugal, and Finland.
The mid-size SUV, roughly the same size as a Volkswagen ID.4, features a 75.3 kWh battery capable of a WLTP range of 510 kilometres. GAC said the vehicle achieved a five-star Euro NCAP crash rating and that its battery is “designed not to ignite even under gunfire,” referring to standard safety tests. GAC added that charging from 10 to 80 per cent takes 24 minutes.
GAC is introducing the Aion V gradually across Europe and has established partnerships with local retail groups. A European spare parts distribution centre has been opened in the Netherlands, alongside a technical support and service team. The Aion UT is also expected to launch in Europe in the future, though no date has been provided.
Speaking to US broadcaster CNBC at the IAA, Wei Haigang, President of GAC International, said the company aims to sell 3,000 Aion V units in Europe this year and 15,000 in 2026. “With increasing brand awareness and entry into further EU markets, this figure is expected to rise to 50,000 GAC models per year by 2027,” he added.
