Renault’s China-based R&D team is developing a new range of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) on Geely’s GEA platform, with production aimed at overseas markets including Southeast Asia and Latin America, AutoPix reported. The collaboration could mark the first external supply of Geely’s latest vehicle architecture.
The upcoming models will be SUV-type vehicles available in both pure electric and plug-in hybrid variants. While Renault will design the vehicle bodies, the chassis and core architecture will be based on Geely’s Galaxy brand models, a move intended to reduce costs and speed up development timelines.
The GEA platform currently underpins Geely’s flagship Galaxy models such as the A7, E5, and the upcoming M9 and Starship 9. Previous joint projects between Geely and partner brands like Volvo, Smart, Polestar, and Jiyue were built on the older CMA platform.
Renault is expected to target markets where it has a strong sales and dealer presence, including South Korea, Latin America, North Africa, and Southeast Asia. The partnership follows Geely’s acquisition of a minority stake in Renault Brazil earlier this year, enabling it to use Renault’s local production and after-sales networks.
The relationship between Geely and Renault began in 2021, leading to the launch of the Grand Koleos—based on Geely’s CMA platform—in South Korea in 2024. The model helped boost Renault Korea’s first-half sales by more than 150% year-on-year, according to Ofweek data.
