Chinese automaker BYD announced that it had stopped production of vehicles with internal combustion engines since March.
BYD will focus on new energy vehicles (NEV), pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles, according to China’s leading new energy vehicle manufacturer.
“In the future, BYD will focus on pure electric and plug-in hybrids in the automotive sector,” the company said in a statement filed with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Sunday.
However, BYD continues to provide after-sales service, servicing and supply of spare parts during the lifetime for vehicles with internal combustion engines to customers.
In March, BYD sold 104,338 passenger cars, including 50,674 plug-in hybrid models and 53,664 pure electric models. No internal combustion engine models were sold in the sales report.
BYD is among six automakers – the others being Volvo, Ford, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar Land Rover – that are committed to phasing out vehicles with internal combustion engines by 2040.
