Firefly, a small electric car developed by Nio Inc’s sub-brand, has been named the safest small car in China’s latest crash test evaluations, according to results released by the China Insurance Automotive Safety Index (C-IASI). The model surpassed several competitors, including Tesla’s Model 3, as Nio aims to combine compact size with top-tier safety standards.
The Firefly model received the highest possible ratings across all four evaluation categories, achieving a G rating for crashworthiness and repair economy, and a G+ rating for occupant protection, pedestrian protection, and safety assistance. C-IASI ratings range from P (Poor) to G+ (Good+), with G+ representing the highest score.
The vehicle ranked among the top three performers in the latest testing cycle, alongside the Huawei-backed Aito M9 SUV and Nio’s Onvo L60 SUV. Tesla’s Model 3, by contrast, received a mid-tier M rating in crashworthiness and repair economy while earning G ratings in the other categories.
Firefly’s safety performance comes despite structural challenges often associated with small cars, such as shorter crumple zones due to limited front and rear overhangs. The model integrates design enhancements, robust hardware, and high-grade materials to offset these limitations. It also features nine airbags—more than those found in some premium luxury models.
