The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is currently discussing the purchase of 250 Tesla Model 3 electric cars. The hundreds of electric vehicles will later be used as local police service cars.

According to a Bloomberg report, the NYPD will spend US$51,940 for each Tesla Model 3 electric car. Thus, the NYPD will have to spend a total of US$12.6 million or equivalent to Rp. 180 billion.

As the largest police department in the US, the NYPD is trying to switch to using electric cars in carrying out its duties. Moreover, President Joe Biden has ordered that gasoline vehicles will no longer be sold by 2035.

This step is taken to produce carbon neutral and protect the environment. In addition, spending on government and police budgets can also be minimized, considering that electric cars are less expensive to maintain than gasoline vehicles.

This agreement between the NYPD and Tesla also made the Ford Motor Co market a little disturbed. The reason, Ford previously dominated the delivery of cars to the government.

Currently the Tesla Model S and Model Y have been used by the Fremont police department in California, as a pilot program. It is not impossible if the Tesla Model 3 will follow to be used as a New York police service car.

Moreover, the Fremont Police said they were quite satisfied with the performance of the Tesla Model S. In its official report in November 2020, the Fremont Police explained that this electric car is able to outperform the gasoline-fueled police car.
