2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV Production Begins, Customer Deliveries to Start Q1 End

GMC announced that production of the 2024 Hummer EV SUV started Monday, and customers will receive deliveries by end of Q1. The automaker announced the start of production during a GMC business update event, where the Hummer EV was described as the “most sought-after vehicle in the world”. The Hummer EV was first introduced in 2020 as a truck and later that year, an SUV version was revealed.

The truck version began production later in 2020 and the first unit was delivered by GM just before the end of 2021. Both the truck and SUV versions have seen strong demand, leading GM to stop accepting new reservations last September due to a waitlist of over 90,000 customers.

The Hummer EV has seen sluggish production with only 854 deliveries in 2022. This is despite GM producing over 6 million cars per year. The low production rate has contributed to a long waitlist for the vehicle, with both the 2023 and 2024 model years already allocated.

The addition of the Hummer EV SUV is expected to increase production and deliveries, with GMC stating that the first customers should receive their vehicles before the end of Q1 2023. Duncan Aldred, Global Vice President of GMC and Buick, claims that the Hummer EV is currently “the most sought-after vehicle in the world”.

The Hummer EV, despite a slow production start, has encountered multiple issues upon delivery to customers. Three recalls have already been issued for the electric truck, including issues with malfunctioning taillights, potential unsealing of the massive 230kWh battery pack, and a voluntary recall for a battery connector concern. Furthermore, the price of the Hummer EV has risen with General Motors (GM) raising the cost of all truck and SUV trim levels by $6,250 due to a rise in commodity parts prices.
