The 2021 Audi Grandsphere concept is a close preview of the next-gen Audi A8, which will have a full electric powertrain and be built on the PPE platform. The highly anticipated A8 E-Tron will launch in 2024 and take on competitors like the BMW i7 and Mercedes-Benz EQS.

According to Audi’s head of design, Marc Lichte, the Grandsphere is a “very concrete teaser” that is “very close” to what will be produced. Out of the four “sphere” concepts, the Grandsphere is the one closest to production due to its production-friendly bodystyle.

While the A8 E-Tron will likely retain many of the Grandsphere’s design elements, there may be slight modifications for production such as smaller wheels, a taller roof, and a more conventional greenhouse. The rear end may also be altered but the “four-door GT” bodystyle of the Grandsphere is expected to remain prominent.

The Audi A8 E-tron’s interior will lack the futuristic features of the Grandsphere concept, such as screen-replacing projectors, sofa-style rear seats, and a retractable steering wheel/pedals. However, the production model will integrate the latest technology from the VW Group.

The A8 E-tron will retain the Grandsphere’s generous dimensions, measuring 5,350mm in length and with a 3,190mm wheelbase. The car will ride on the EV-dedicated PPE architecture developed by Audi and Porsche and will be the last ICE-powered A8.

The Grandsphere was equipped with dual electric motors producing 711 hp and a 120 kWh battery offering 466 miles of range, which could be mirrored in the A8 E-tron.

The concept also had all-wheel-steering and an adaptive suspension, but these are no longer top priorities for Audi who is focusing on luxury, high-tech, and autonomous driving. Prototypes of the A8 E-tron are expected to be seen during development testing this year ahead of its 2024 debut.
