Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has embarked on a transformative journey, opting to produce its own Enduro motors for the dual-motor versions of its sought-after R1T and R1S models. By bringing motor production under its own roof, the company is steadfast in its pursuit to expedite production and dissolve the existing backlog fueled by overwhelming consumer interest.

Amidst the humming of machinery, Rivian's manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, has evolved into a round-the-clock operation, engaging in three shifts to address production shortfalls that have been impacting the R1T and R1S models. A captivating behind-the-scenes video peels back the curtain on these intensified efforts, amplifying Rivian's commitment to surmount the challenge. Though exact details regarding revised delivery schedules remain undisclosed, the switch to a three-shift system signals a resolute push towards hastened production rates.

Originally aiming for a production milestone of 50,000 units in 2022, Rivian was compelled to recalibrate its target due to the chip crisis and supply chain disruptions. Even with the revised goal, a deficit of 663 units persisted, underscoring the gravity of the challenges at hand. Frank Klein, Rivian's Chief Operating Officer, affirmed the company's determination to pivot production this year. Klein disclosed that the production of the in-house dual motor commenced at the Normal plant in February, accompanied by ambitious plans to roll out 44 units per hour, equating to a formidable capacity of 832 Enduro motors each day.

However, it is important to acknowledge that Klein's projections were hatched during the era of the plant's two-shift operation. The recent transition to a three-shift schedule is projected to amplify the production yield of dual motors, potentially fortifying Rivian's endeavors to reach its updated production target of 52,000 units for the present year.

Rivian's proactive measures extend beyond the assembly line, encompassing the customer experience as well. By grafting an additional shift onto its operations, the company's mission is to significantly curtail the waiting period for vehicle deliveries. At present, Rivian's official customer site underscores that the customary vehicle delivery window stands at 16 weeks from the point of order, reflecting the brand's unwavering commitment to enhancing customer satisfaction.

Frank Klein, elaborating on this initiative, emphasized, “Our focus is on ensuring our customers experience the thrill of their Rivian vehicles as swiftly as possible. By adding a third shift, we're stepping up the pace of our operations, driven by our commitment to delivering an unparalleled ownership experience.”

The R1T and R1S models, bedecked with Rivian's performance dual motor configuration, unleash a formidable power of up to 665 horsepower and an astonishing 829 lb-ft of torque in the Performance variant. Zipping from a standstill to 60 mph in a mere 3.5 seconds, these models also offer an estimated range of 352 miles as per EPA ratings. Rivian's strategic move to internalize motor production underscores its unyielding dedication to innovation, efficiency, and catering to the burgeoning appetite of a discerning market.

As Rivian navigates the intricate tapestry of the automotive industry, its audacious decision to insource motor production underscores a relentless pursuit of excellence. By wielding greater command over its manufacturing processes, Rivian inches closer to fulfilling its commitment of delivering groundbreaking electric vehicles to a burgeoning customer base. With an unwavering focus on elevating production rates and optimizing operations, Rivian is poised to triumph over the challenges that once stood as roadblocks on its path to eminence.
