Zoox has issued a recall for its Automated Driving System (ADS) software in vehicles released before April 17, 2025, following the discovery of a flaw that could result in misjudging the movements of other vehicles, thereby increasing the risk of crashes.

The flaw was identified when another vehicle approached perpendicularly and stopped. The Zoox system incorrectly predicted the vehicle’s path, potentially leading the autonomous vehicle into a hazardous driving situation.

Credit: ZooxThe issue was most prominent at speeds above 40 mph, particularly when the vehicle emerged slowly from a perpendicular driveway and halted. The ADS mistakenly assumed the vehicle would continue into the Zoox vehicle’s lane, planning an unsafe course.

The recall affects approximately 270 Zoox vehicles and applies to all versions of the ADS software released before the mentioned date. Zoox has already initiated an update to fix the issue, with the revised software to be implemented across all affected vehicles by April 17, 2025.

The software glitch was linked to an incident on April 8, 2025, in Las Vegas, where a Zoox robotaxi, operating without a passenger, collided with a stationary car. There were no injuries, but Zoox paused its driverless operations for a brief investigation, which led to the decision to issue the recall. Operations resumed only after the software update was fully implemented.
