ZF LIFETEC has introduced a new steering wheel concept that can fold down electromechanically, a development the company says will help meet the changing demands of vehicle interiors as automated driving becomes more common. The technology is designed to create more space in the cabin while maintaining key safety and control functions.
The rim can retract downward in about two seconds when the vehicle is in automated driving mode or parked, providing additional room for work, entertainment, or relaxation.
Despite the novel mechanism, the steering wheel retains its traditional structure, including a driver’s airbag in the center hub and familiar control buttons. A central light element changes color to indicate the vehicle’s driving mode.
“Our transformable steering wheel is a visionary concept that connects manual and automated driving in a seamless way,” said Harald Lutz, Head of Research & Development at ZF LIFETEC. The system also incorporates anti-pinch protection to prevent injuries during retraction and can be adapted to different vehicle layouts.
ZF LIFETEC said the design responds to growing demand for flexible interiors, particularly in Asian markets, where vehicles are increasingly seen as multipurpose spaces. The company plans to showcase the steering wheel concept at the IAA Mobility event.
