Xpeng officially launched the right-hand drive version of its X9 multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in Indonesia on Wednesday, as part of its broader strategy to grow in Southeast Asia. Local assembly is set to begin next month in Jakarta.
The right-hand drive X9 is priced from 9.9 billion Indonesian rupiah ($60,980) and marks Xpeng’s first localization production project outside China. “The right-hand drive version of the X9 will begin local production in Jakarta in July,” the company said on Weibo, describing it as “the official launch of Xpeng’s first overseas localization production project in Indonesia.”
Initially unveiled in China on January 1, 2024, the X9 is Xpeng’s first MPV model. A refreshed 2025 version was introduced on April 15 in China with four variants priced from RMB 359,800 ($50,200) to RMB 419,800.
Xpeng had started pre-sales for the X9 and its G6 SUV in Indonesia on March 16, stating at the time that local production would begin in the second half of 2025. The updated July timeline suggests the company is accelerating its rollout plans in the region.
Indonesia — Southeast Asia’s largest car market and most populous nation — is central to Xpeng’s global expansion. The country aims to produce 400,000 electric vehicles by 2025 and scale to 1 million units annually by 2035, according to the automaker.
Xpeng plans to expand into over 60 countries and regions by the end of 2025 and targets overseas markets to account for 50% of its sales over the next decade. Currently, the company has a presence in over 30 international markets.
