Xpeng and Volkswagen have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on establishing one of China’s largest superfast charging networks, targeting the world’s biggest electric vehicle (EV) market.
The partnership will make over 20,000 charging piles, spanning 420 cities, accessible to customers of both Xpeng and Volkswagen, the companies announced on Friday. Additionally, they plan to explore co-branded superfast charging stations to accelerate network expansion and boost operational efficiency.
“This collaboration marks the fourth major milestone in our long-term strategic partnership with Volkswagen, further strengthening our commitment to innovation and growth in the EV sector,” said Xpeng in a statement.
Volkswagen’s $700 million investment in Xpeng, announced in July 2023, laid the foundation for their alliance, which has since included co-developing EVs for China’s mid-size car market, joint sourcing of components, and integrating Xpeng’s electrical architecture into Volkswagen’s platforms.
Xpeng operates 1,790 charging stations with 9,070 piles across China and is advancing its technology with next-gen chargers offering peak power of up to 800 kW. Meanwhile, Volkswagen’s CAMS network, established in 2019, boasts 1,621 supercharging stations and plans to expand to 17,000 terminals by 2025.
The collaboration underscores a shared vision to enhance EV infrastructure and meet surging demand for sustainable mobility solutions in China.
