What We Know So Far About Volvo EX30

Volvo is preparing to introduce a new electric vehicle called the EX30, adding to its lineup of eco-friendly cars. Positioned as a compact crossover, the EX30 is expected to be Volvo’s most affordable electric vehicle, sitting below the C40 and XC40 Recharge models.

The Swedish automaker has already released a teaser image of the EX30, and patent images of the final product have also surfaced online. As we await its imminent debut, let’s delve into what else we can expect from this new offering.

Volvo is known for its impeccable design, and the EX30 continues this tradition. Unlike other automakers that tend to incorporate excessive styling cues, Volvo strikes a balance with simple yet elegant design. The EX30 resembles a smaller version of the EX90, featuring a sleek front fascia with segmented matrix LED headlamps. The hood and front fenders display tasteful creases, while the side profile exudes a sculpted appearance.

The roof and glasshouse exhibit similarities to the XC40, and the solid rear haunches give the vehicle a stable stance. At the rear, the EX30 boasts a distinctive lighting signature, with the main taillamps spanning the width of the tailgate and secondary clusters flanking the upper glass.

Inside the cabin, the baby EV will showcase a design similar to other recent Volvo and Polestar models. The dashboard will be dominated by a large vertical infotainment screen, complemented by a smaller landscape-oriented digital instrument cluster positioned behind the steering wheel. Instead of a high console, there will be a sliding bin with ample storage, providing an open feel for the driver and front passenger.

Volvo places great emphasis on utilizing recycled materials throughout the EX30’s interior. The seats will feature a blend of wool, and a panoramic roof will contribute to a spacious atmosphere. The vehicle will also offer advanced technological features, including over-the-air updates with 5G connectivity, Nvidia Drive AI, and Google apps and services assistance.

The EX30 is expected to be built on Geely’s SEA architecture, which it shares with similar-sized models like the Smart #1 and Zeekr X. Speculations suggest that the incorporation of aluminum in key components will reduce weight, resulting in improved performance and handling capabilities.

Volvo has already highlighted some noteworthy features of the EX30 through teasers. The electric SUV will come equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including a unique door opening alert system that alerts passengers to approaching bikes, pedestrians, or vehicles.

As with all Volvo vehicles, safety is a top priority for the EX30. The automaker has integrated “Safe Space Technology” into the ADAS package, which includes a sensor behind the steering wheel that monitors the driver’s eye and face movements to detect distractions or drowsiness. Additionally, the intersection auto brake feature aims to prevent collisions when another vehicle unexpectedly crosses the EX30’s path.

Passive safety measures have also been prioritized in the EX30. The SUV features a robust safety cage, reinforced pillars, and roof, as well as high-strength steel to protect the battery’s integrity. Notably, a new far-side airbag positioned on the inside of the driver’s seat is designed to mitigate head and thorax injuries in the event of a side impact.

While specific details about range and performance are yet to be revealed, it is rumored that the EX30 will utilize a lithium-ion phosphate battery for cost-effectiveness and a 400-volt architecture to enable DC rapid charging up to 250 kW. The standard version will have a single rear-drive motor, with an optional more powerful dual-motor setup. In the Smart #1, the single motor version delivers 268 hp, while the range-topping dual motor model boasts 422 hp.

In terms of range, the larger EX90, with its massive 111 kWh battery, offers an estimated WLTP range of 372 miles (600 km). However, the EX30 is expected to have figures closer to the C40 Recharge, which features a 69 kWh battery and a range of up to 438 km (272 miles).

With a length of approximately 4.2-4.3 meters (~165-170 inches), the EX30 aims to compete with various models in its segment, such as the Hyundai Kona EV and the Mini Countryman. Depending on its price, it might even rival the long-rumored Tesla Model 2 if and when it enters production.

The official reveal of the EX30 is scheduled for June 7, according to Volvo. Interested buyers will have the opportunity to pre-order the vehicle in select markets starting from that date.
