Waymo, the autonomous driving unit of Alphabet, has surpassed 200,000 weekly paid robotaxi rides, doubling its trip volume in under a year, according to CEO Sundar Pichai.

The company, which operates driverless taxi services in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix, has expanded significantly from providing 10,000 rides per week two years ago. The increase marks a 20-fold growth over that period, highlighting the growing adoption of autonomous ride-hailing.

Waymo’s self-driving system now covers more than 1 million miles weekly. The company is set to further expand its commercial operations, with launches in Austin and Atlanta planned for 2025 in collaboration with Uber, followed by an entry into Miami in early 2026.

With its growing footprint, Waymo remains a leader in the autonomous taxi market. Its expansion comes as competitors face challenges, with Cruise discontinuing its robotaxi operations and Zoox still in the early stages of deployment in San Francisco and Las Vegas without commercial service.
