Volkswagen will set up an electric car battery manufacturing plant in Canada. This VW battery cell factory will be the first outside Europe.
The German manufacturer has added a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in North America in August 2022 regarding the location of a suitable electric car battery factory.
“This country offers high standards of sustainability and ideal economic conditions. The Canadian government has proven to be a strong and reliable partner,” said VW CEO Oliver Blume, quoted by Carscoops today, Monday, December 5, 2022.
According to Head of Technology at VW, Thomas Schmall, the MoU was made non-binding so that Canada could enter the list of options for gigafactory locations for electric car batteries.
Volkswagen Blume boss signed the MoU with Canadian Minister for Innovation, Science and Industry François-Philippe Champagne in Wolfsburg last Sunday, December 4, 2022.
“Today Canada and VW will continue our joint work to grow Canada’s and Germany’s clean transport sector,” Minister Champagne said.
Last August, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz signed an MoU with Canada to secure access to minerals and shorten the supply chain for electric car production in North America.
The agreement will help VW and Mercedes gain access to raw materials for electric car batteries, namely lithium, nickel and cobalt.
