Volvo, backed by Geely, enters the minivan arena with the launch of its inaugural electric model, the EM90, designed exclusively for the burgeoning Chinese market. The move comes amid a resurgence of interest in minivans in Asia, particularly in the luxury segment, with China witnessing nearly half a million minivan sales in the first half of 2023.
The EM90, boasting an impressive range of over 450 miles (720+ kilometers), aligns with Volvo’s strategic push into the electric vehicle (EV) sector. Positioned to compete with both EV and conventional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) offerings in China, the model faces rivals like the Lexus LM.
Drawing inspiration from Volvo’s automotive heritage, the EM90 pays homage to the 1953 Duett while sharing uncanny similarities with the recently-introduced Zeekr 009 from the Geely Group. Essentially a twin to the Zeekr 009, the EM90 differentiates itself with distinctive Volvo elements such as the iconic grille, Thor’s Hammer headlights, and refined trim details.
The all-electric minivan mirrors the Zeekr 009’s dimensions, measuring 5,209 mm in length, 2,024 mm in width, and 1,867 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,205 mm. Equipped with a single 268 hp (200 kW) electric motor on the rear axle, the EM90 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.3 seconds.
Powered by a CATL-sourced 116 kWh battery, the EM90 facilitates rapid charging, going from 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes. Volvo claims a range of 459 miles (738 km) based on China’s CLTC driving cycle tests, known for their relatively generous estimates compared to the WLTP cycle.
With a focus on versatility and luxury, the EM90 accommodates three rows of seating in a 2+2+2 layout. The second row stands out with captain-style seats featuring electric recline, heating, and ventilation, complemented by folding trays. A 15.6-inch retractable screen in the middle row enhances the in-cabin experience, supporting mobile screen projection and various third-party apps.
Exemplifying Scandinavian design influence, the EM90’s cockpit embraces sleek minimalism with a digital instrument screen and a sizable 15.4-inch tablet-style center infotainment system. The model incorporates advanced driver assistance systems, utilizing a comprehensive sensor set for enhanced safety.
Volvo plans to exclusively market the EM90 in China, with initial deliveries set to begin shortly. Priced at 818,000 yuan (approximately $114,000), the minivan marks Volvo’s latest foray into the rapidly evolving electric vehicle landscape.
