Volvo Penta, in partnership with port equipment experts MOL, has unveiled an innovative 4×4 electric RoRo (roll-on, roll-off) truck at the Port of Ghent. This collaboration represents a significant step forward in sustainable port operations and highlights the potential of electric vehicles in heavy-duty applications.

RoRo trucks, also known as yard dogs or terminal trucks, are crucial for handling heavy payloads in shipping terminals, logistics centers, and rail yards. They are designed to withstand high g-forces and operate in all weather conditions. The new electric RoRo truck developed by MOL and Volvo Penta features a 4WD powertrain, providing enhanced traction on wet and slippery ramps.

Conrad Verplancke, a sales engineer from MOL, highlighted the technical advancements achieved through the collaboration, stating, “The full electric 4×4 RME225 terminal tractor demonstrates our efforts to expand our range of new emission-free vehicles specifically for the rigorous needs of heavy-duty port equipment.”

The electric RoRo truck is equipped with a Volvo Penta driveline comprising three battery packs totaling 270 kWh of installed energy, an EPT802 gearbox, and two 200 kW drive motors (one on each axle). Additionally, a separate 50 kW motor powers the truck’s hydraulic systems and fifth wheel.

One of the key advantages of the collaboration is access to charging technology from Volvo Trucks, CE, and Volvo Cars. This ensures compatibility with both L2 and DCFC chargers through the CCS standard, offering fleet managers greater flexibility and future-proofing their infrastructure.

Jeroen Overvelde, area sales manager at Volvo Penta, emphasized the long-term benefits of electrification, stating, “The full electric tractor matches its diesel counterparts in performance, with potentially higher acceleration rates and available torque on the RME225. Success hinges on delivering superior performance and optimizing total cost of ownership.”

The introduction of the electric RoRo truck underscores Volvo Penta and MOL’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in the maritime industry. The collaboration represents a significant milestone in the adoption of electric vehicles in heavy-duty port operations.
