In a remarkable stride towards sustainability, the Volvo Group delivered an impressive total of 1,442 electric trucks during the first half of 2023, marking a substantial increase from the 409 electric trucks delivered in the same period the previous year.
Surprisingly, a majority of these electric trucks do not bear the Volvo logo. Out of the 1,442 units, 687 belonged to the renowned Volvo brand, while 748 units were from Renault Trucks, with an additional seven coming from the US brand Mack Trucks. It’s worth noting that the 748 electric trucks delivered by Renault Trucks are further categorized into 452 light-duty trucks and 296 heavy- and medium-duty vehicles. On the other hand, Volvo and Mack brands do not differentiate between light and heavy-duty electric vehicles, though Volvo’s range extends from 16 to 44 tonnes.
Breaking down the figures quarterly, Renault Trucks managed to outpace Volvo Trucks internally in Q2, selling 337 electric trucks compared to Volvo’s 417 units. Among Renault Trucks’ deliveries, 168 were medium- and heavy-duty trucks, while 249 were light-duty electric trucks. Mack Trucks also saw a notable increase in Q2, delivering five electric trucks compared to just two in the previous quarter. Overall, the Volvo Group delivered a total of 759 electric trucks in Q2.
The push for electric vehicles extended beyond trucks as well. The group delivered 165 electric buses during the same period, representing a significant 136% increase from the previous year’s first half.
Volvo Construction Equipment (CE) division also played its part in sustainability efforts, delivering 430 electric machines in the first half of 2023, a notable increase from the 282 units delivered in the corresponding period last year.
Furthermore, Volvo Group shared insights into its order intake. While 1,502 electric trucks were ordered in the first half of the year, a slight decline of 6% was observed compared to the same period in the previous year. Despite this decline, Volvo Trucks stood out, accounting for the majority of the orders with 896 units, indicating a 10% increase from the previous year. Renault Trucks, however, experienced a 24% decline in orders with 582 units, contributing to the overall 6% drop in the group’s order volume. The electric truck order count for Mack stood at 24 units between January and June.
Notably, Volvo Buses also saw a significant increase in new orders. With 365 all-electric buses ordered in the first half of 2023, the numbers skyrocketed by an impressive 181% from the same period last year when only 130 units were ordered. However, orders for hybrid buses witnessed a considerable decrease, falling from 52 units to a mere seven vehicles. Overall, Volvo Group received orders for 3,582 buses across all drive types in H1 2023, indicating that the share of electric buses in new orders amounted to 10.2%.
With this accelerated growth in electric vehicle deliveries and orders, Volvo Group is making commendable progress towards sustainable transport solutions and is set to make a notable impact on the global transportation landscape.
