Volvo Cars has launched a new initiative in Sweden offering customers one year of free home charging when they purchase or lease a new fully electric vehicle, in partnership with energy company Vattenfall. The program, which begins in February 2026, aims to encourage more drivers to transition to electric mobility while promoting the use of fossil-free electricity.
Under the offer, Volvo’s fully electric car customers will receive complimentary fossil-free home charging for one year, covering up to 25,000 kilometers of driving. Eligible customers will need to sign an electricity contract with Vattenfall and use the smart charging function in the Volvo Cars app once available. The app will manage charging schedules during periods of lower energy costs and lower CO2 emissions, while also tracking electricity consumption and automatically deducting the corresponding costs from monthly bills.

“We are listening to our customers, and by providing free charging offers we hope to create value for them and accelerate our collective journey to a smarter, greener society,” said Alejandro Castro Pérez, Vice President of Energy Solutions at Volvo Cars.
The collaboration builds on Volvo Cars’ long-standing partnership with Vattenfall, which has previously included initiatives such as the 2012 launch of the world’s first diesel plug-in hybrid, the Volvo V60, and the use of fossil-free energy at Volvo’s Torslanda manufacturing plant. Branislav Slavic, Head of Customers & Solutions at Vattenfall Nordics, said the initiative supports “a future where everyone can choose fossil-free ways of transportation.”

Insights from the Swedish rollout will guide Volvo’s plans to expand the program globally through similar partnerships with sustainable energy providers. Starting in 2026, the company plans to extend the offer to bi-directionally enabled models, such as the upcoming EX90, allowing customers to use their vehicles’ batteries to power their homes or feed electricity back into the grid.
Volvo Cars currently offers five fully electric models, with the new EX60 set to debut in January next year. The company said the new initiative underscores its commitment to accelerating electrification and lowering barriers for customers transitioning to electric driving.
