In a significant move towards bolstering its electric vehicle (EV) offerings, Volvo has recently announced its decision to adopt Tesla’s NACS connector on its forthcoming electric models, starting from 2025. Additionally, the Swedish automaker has plans to introduce an adapter for existing Volvo EVs in the following year, granting access to Tesla’s Supercharger network.
By aligning itself with Tesla, Volvo joins the ranks of other prominent electric automakers, including Ford, GM, and Rivian, who have already chosen to embrace this standardized connector for their EVs in the North American market.
Volvo Cars, in a press release, conveyed its commitment to transforming into a fully electric car manufacturer by 2030. Through an unprecedented agreement with Tesla, the company aims to provide both current and future Volvo EV owners with seamless access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network spanning the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The recent announcement mirrors those made by other automakers, with Volvo affirming that its EVs in North America will feature the NACS connector as a standard charging option commencing in 2025. In the interim, the company plans to offer an adapter to existing Volvo EV owners, enabling them to tap into Tesla’s Supercharger network.
While Ford and GM have stated that the adapter will be available in 2024, Rivian has specified a target of spring 2024. Volvo now asserts that the adapter will be accessible to its EV owners during the first half of 2024.

Commenting on this transformative development, Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo Cars, emphasized the company’s commitment to facilitating the transition to electric mobility. Rowan stated, “As part of our journey to becoming fully electric by 2030, we want to make life with an electric car as easy as possible. One major inhibitor to more people making the shift to electric driving…is access to easy and convenient charging infrastructure.” He further affirmed that this agreement with Tesla signifies a significant stride in removing this barrier for Volvo drivers across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Volvo has additionally confirmed that it will offer a NACS to CCS adapter, ensuring its EV owners continue to have access to CCS chargers throughout North America. By extending this support to multiple charging standards, Volvo aims to facilitate greater convenience and flexibility for its EV customers.
