Volkswagen will produce an electric SUV based on its best-selling Tiguan model. The vehicle, which is expected to be named the ID.Tiguan, will be built on VW’s improved MEB-Plus platform and will be manufactured at its main plant in Wolfsburg. The announcement was made at a works council meeting attended by Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
The electric Tiguan is scheduled to launch in 2026 and is designed to play a crucial role in VW’s strategy until the flagship Trinity EV goes into production. The Trinity was initially planned to launch in 2026 but was delayed due to software issues. The Tiguan is expected to fill the gap, launching in 2026 instead.

VW CEO Oliver Blume confirmed that the company was working to bring iconic models like the Golf and the Tiguan into the electric age. According to VW, many customers have requested that popular models like the Golf, GTI, and Tiguan be converted to electric. Based on previous comments, it is expected that the electric Tiguan will be named the ID.Tiguan.
VW’s Wolfsburg plant is currently not being fully utilized due to chip shortages. By electrifying one of its most popular brand names, VW hopes to boost production and sales. The Tiguan is a truly global car and is popular in many markets outside of Europe, making it an ideal vehicle to carry the brand into the electric era.
