Volkswagen has introduced the latest iteration of its iconic camper van, the seventh-generation California, building on the success of its predecessors with new features and improvements. With over 280,000 units of the California sold, Volkswagen’s latest offering aims to continue the legacy of this bestselling model.

The new California retains key features that have made it a favorite among camper van enthusiasts, including the iconic pop-up roof and a meticulously planned interior designed for both everyday use and adventurous journeys. Volkswagen has enhanced the California with the latest powertrain, assist, and infotainment systems, as well as a new camper van architecture, ensuring that it remains a versatile and capable vehicle.

One of the key upgrades in the new California is the inclusion of two sliding doors as standard on all models, offering increased versatility and convenience. Another notable addition is the introduction of a plug-in hybrid all-wheel drive system, a first for the California lineup. This system allows the camper van to temporarily operate as an electric vehicle, providing both efficiency and long overall ranges.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will offer the new California in several versions, including the Beach, Beach Tour, Beach Camper (with a mini-kitchen in the rear), as well as Coast and Ocean versions, each catering to different needs and preferences. The new California is positioned between the smaller Caddy California and the larger Grand California, offering a comprehensive range of camper vans to suit various requirements.

All versions of the new California feature a pop-up roof, two sliding doors, and a range of interior enhancements aimed at improving comfort and functionality. The camper van now also offers the option of an awning on either side, providing shelter from the elements while enjoying the outdoors.

Under the hood, the new California is based on Volkswagen’s modular transverse matrix (MQB) platform, offering a range of driver assist systems for added safety and comfort. The introduction of a plug-in hybrid drive (eHybrid) with 4MOTION all-wheel drive further enhances the California’s capabilities, making it an ideal companion for outdoor enthusiasts.
