Volkswagen has officially launched the new Tayron SUV in Europe, a spacious vehicle designed to bridge the gap between the premium-class Touareg and the mid-class Tiguan. The Tayron, available in configurations with five or seven seats, promises a blend of style, functionality, and advanced technology to meet diverse consumer needs.

The Tayron will offer a total of seven drive systems, including two next-generation plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (eHybrid) capable of achieving electric ranges exceeding 100 km. The hybrid models can also facilitate long journeys, with a maximum driving range of up to 850 km between refueling stops. Additionally, with a towing capacity of up to 2.5 tonnes, the Tayron is positioned as an attractive option for those requiring a capable towing vehicle.

Starting with the Life version, the Tayron is priced from €45,475 and comes equipped with a 110 kW mild hybrid drive alongside a comprehensive suite of standard features. Its trade show premiere will take place at the Mondial de l’Auto in Paris from October 14 to 20.

While the Tayron is expected to influence the next iteration of the Tiguan for the U.S. market, it’s important to note that the U.S. version will feature a long-wheelbase setup with different sheet metal, powertrain options, and equipment. More details regarding the U.S. offerings will be revealed later this year.

The Tayron’s entry-level Life package boasts an impressive array of standard assist systems. These include adaptive cruise control (ACC), a function for oncoming vehicle braking while turning, lane change assistance (Side Assist), lane keeping assistance (Lane Assist), an automatic emergency braking system with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring (Front Assist), Park Assist Plus, a rearview camera system, a dynamic road sign display, and a new exit warning system. This exit warning system enhances safety by preventing door openings if another road user approaches from behind.

In terms of powertrain options, Volkswagen will offer a variety of systems for the Tayron, including mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, gasoline, and diesel engines. Initially, the company will launch all versions with a mild hybrid drive (eTSI), followed by the introduction of two plug-in hybrid options, two turbocharged gasoline engines (TSI), and two turbocharged diesel engines (TDI).

All powertrains are paired with an automatic dual-clutch gearbox (DSG), ensuring a smooth driving experience. The entry-level eTSI engine, with an output of 110 kW (150 PS), incorporates advanced 48 V technology for improved efficiency. The two plug-in hybrid models deliver system power of 150 kW (204 PS) and 200 kW (272 PS), respectively, supported by a 19.7 kWh (net) battery that can be charged at AC wallboxes or DC quick-charging stations.

The Tayron’s largest TDI engine, producing 142 kW (193 PS), comes standard with Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, enhancing performance and handling. All Tayron 4MOTION models are rated for maximum trailer weights of up to 2,500 kg (braked, on a 12% gradient), and they include the Trailer Assist maneuvering assist system, making it easy to handle larger trailers.

Pre-sales for the Tayron have commenced, with the entry-level 110 kW eTSI in the Life specification package available from €45,475. Buyers can also order the two eHybrid versions and the more powerful 142 kW TDI model.
