Volkswagen has unveiled a limited-edition production model of its ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE, one year after its debut as a show car at the ID. Meeting in Locarno in 2024. Only 1,990 units of the high-performance electric hatchback will be produced, honouring the launch year of the original Golf II Fire and Ice from 1990.
Available in two power variants—210 kW and 240 kW—the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE features a rear-mounted electric motor delivering up to 545 Nm of torque. Volkswagen claims acceleration from 0 to 100 kph in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 200 kph.
The vehicle is powered by a 79 kWh lithium-ion battery with a maximum charging capacity of 185 kW. A 10-80 per cent charge takes approximately 26 minutes on a DC fast charger, and WLTP-certified range stands at 591 km. In Germany, prices start at €56,020.
The exterior of the special edition is defined by its distinctive ‘Ultra Violet Metallic’ paint and 20-inch “Locarno” alloy wheels. The model revives a collaboration with fashion designer and filmmaker Willy Bogner, who also helped design the original Golf Fire and Ice edition over three decades ago. “The revival of the cooperation between Volkswagen and BOGNER FIRE+ICE after more than 30 years and the realisation of a series production model is a major milestone for us,” said Daniel Hiendlmeier, Managing Director and Chief Brand Officer of BOGNER.
Volkswagen said the strong public response to last year’s concept vehicle encouraged the company to proceed with a production version. “The ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE demonstrates the emotive appeal of our premium sports model, while also carrying a piece of Volkswagen history into the electric future,” said Martin Sander, Member of the Volkswagen Board of Management for Sales, Marketing and After Sales.
