Volkswagen ID. Buzz earn five-star Euro NCAP crash and safety test

Euro NCAP has just released the safety test results of the ID.Buzz electric MPV which was released earlier this year.

The crash test results of the electric MPV did not disappoint and earned a maximum five star rating.

Volkswagen ID.Buzz (rear-wheel drive version with 150 kW electric motor, currently available in Europe) notes fairly good passenger protection, according to Euro NCAP. Adult occupant protection is estimated at 92%, while child occupant protection is 87%.

Volkswagen ID.Buzz received a score of 90 percent in Safety Assistance and 60 percent in the Vulnerable Road User rating. But we assume that it is largely due to the shape of the front, typical of a van.

The Vokswagen ID.Buzz itself weighs quite a lot – 2,384 kg – considering the battery capacity is 82 kWh. If the manufacturer decides to launch a higher capacity version of the battery, it will probably be heavier. An all-wheel-drive powertrain will be on top of that.

In terms of Safety Assist, Euro NCAP says that ID. Buzz scored 90% of its 2022 test protocol, which is mostly in line with modern BEVs (some models are within ±5 percentage points of that).

For now, VW is selling the vehicle exclusively with an 82 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that has a usable capacity of 77 kWh.

The version that will be sold in the United States for the 2024 model year will have a longer wheelbase, large enough to accommodate the larger battery. Additionally, there are plans for an entry-level Pure variant in Europe with a 62 kWh battery (58 kWh net).
