Volkswagen is set to release a new feature that will take drivers on a trip down memory lane. The upcoming Volkswagen ID.2all will debut configurable dials that will allow drivers to travel back in time with classic Volkswagen dials. Two designs have been previewed so far, with the “Retro Mode Golf Era” being the standout favorite among fans.
The design features classic square dials with white numbers on a black background and an LED light pack that provides visual vehicle updates, including a single indicator lamp that flashes green, regardless of the turn direction. The left dial functions as a speedometer, while the right dial displays the battery charge meter.

The retro gauge cluster and infotainment appearances on the VW ID 2all concept are awesome, I can't wait for more automakers to start offering optional layouts like this pic.twitter.com/2FJOWLTcnK

The new dials are not the only feature that will take drivers back in time. Even the infotainment screen will feature an old-school push-button radio and cassette tape, providing a fun and nostalgic touch to the car’s interior. For those who long for the simple and elegant dials of the 1950s and 1960s, Volkswagen will offer an interface that mirrors the single dial of the classic Beetle. The speedometer reads up to 220 km/h (137 mph), faster than any old Beetle could ever reach.
The graphics surrounding the single dial mirror the vented grille design seen in Beetles from the mid-60s, and the Wolfsburg emblem comprises a dog on a castle, which was a staple of older VWs. Volkswagen is honoring this logo and paying homage to its rich history with this new feature.

This new feature is a welcome addition to Volkswagen’s lineup, which has been criticized in recent years for its cumbersome infotainment system and touch-capacitive controls. The redesigned system is coming in 2025, but ahead of that, Volkswagen has bestowed the ID.4 with a software update to improve the finicky setup.
The ID.2all is set to debut in 2025 and is being touted as the electric successor to the Golf. With a targeted price tag of around $26,000, the compact EV looks promising and has the potential to serve so many customers who, up until now, could not afford a new electric car. We can’t wait to see this feature introduced to existing models like the ID.4, as it would bring some playfulness to the somewhat somber interior. Volkswagen is proving that it is possible to innovate while still paying homage to its rich history.
