Volkswagen is currently engaged in discussions with international technology firms to explore potential collaborations aimed at creating digital prototypes for new products and features using artificial intelligence (AI), the company announced on Wednesday.
As part of this initiative, Volkswagen has established a new ‘artificial intelligence lab’ dedicated to generating innovative product ideas. The focus of the lab includes exploring potential partnerships with technology companies across China, North America, and Europe, according to a company statement.
The primary goal of the AI lab is to develop early-stage prototypes, with specific emphasis on areas such as AI-optimized charging cycles, predictive maintenance services, and voice recognition. The company confirmed that exploratory talks with international tech companies are already underway for initial projects, although further details were not provided in the statement.
Importantly, the AI lab operates independently and is not affiliated with Volkswagen’s software unit Cariad or any specific brand. This independent structure is designed to facilitate faster processes within the company.

Successful prototypes developed in the lab will be passed on to Volkswagen brands for validation and implementation. The supervisory board of the lab will include representatives from Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche.
The move comes at a time when Volkswagen’s software unit, Cariad, is undergoing restructuring efforts to address delays and overhaul challenges. Reports suggest that the restructuring plan may involve workforce reductions as Cariad works towards introducing new software architectures to the market.
