Volkswagen has introduced a subscription option for UK drivers of its ID.3 electric vehicles to unlock the models’ full performance. The ID.3 Pro and Pro S are currently listed with 201 horsepower on Volkswagen’s UK website. To access the full 228 horsepower, drivers can either pay £16.50 ($22) per month or a one-time lifetime fee of £649 ($880).
Volkswagen said the performance upgrade does not impact the vehicle’s range. The one-time payment is tied to the car itself, meaning the upgrade remains with the vehicle if it is sold.
The subscription fee structure is notably higher than standard streaming services, with the monthly cost nearly three times that of a typical Netflix subscription.
Volkswagen follows a trend in the automotive industry of charging for optional vehicle features, though previous attempts, such as BMW’s $18-per-month subscription for heated seats, faced consumer backlash and were eventually discontinued.
Volkswagen’s UK ID.3 rollout comes as the company prepares to expand its EV lineup. Upcoming models include the ID.2 and an ID.2 SUV launching next year, with a production version of the ID.1 expected in 2027.
Volkswagen is also considering a smaller “mini Buzz” model potentially replacing the Touran, though no official plans have been confirmed.
