Vessev, a New Zealand-based company, has received commercial approval for its VS-9 electric hydrofoil, which is set to begin operations in Auckland on 29 January 2025. The first customer for the VS-9, Fullers360, New Zealand’s largest ferry operator, will offer this innovative transportation option to tourists, showcasing a new level of high-end tourism in the region.

The VS-9, an electric hydrofoil, is designed to achieve a top speed of 25 knots (46.3 kph) and a range of 50 nautical miles (92.6 km), similar to the electric hydrofoil ferry P-12 from Swedish manufacturer Candela. However, unlike the P-12, which can carry 30 passengers, the VS-9 is designed for a more intimate experience with a capacity of 10 passengers. This makes it ideal for a premium tourist experience, where passengers can float above the water while enjoying panoramic views of Auckland’s iconic skyline, the Harbour Bridge, and the Hauraki Gulf.

Tickets for the ‘Electric Hydrofoil Experience’ will be priced at 195 New Zealand dollars (approximately 107.50 euros), targeting well-off tourists seeking a unique thrill. This marks a distinct approach compared to Stockholm, where Candela’s hydrofoil is used for daily commuter services. Fullers360’s CEO Mike Horne sees this as a significant step in the company’s decarbonisation journey, with the VS-9 marking a new era for luxury tourism in New Zealand. Horne believes the project will further establish the country as a leader in maritime innovation.

Vessev CEO Eric Laakmann also expressed pride in the achievement, noting that Fullers360 is the first major ferry operator to integrate a certified electric hydrofoil into its fleet. He views this milestone as the beginning of broader developments, with plans already underway for larger electric hydrofoils capable of carrying 100 passengers. Laakmann is optimistic about the future of electric hydrofoils, envisioning them on major bodies of water around the world within the next decade.
