USPS commits to adding more than 66,000 electric delivery vehicles by 2028

USPS will more than double its purchase of postal mail electric cars. The funds have been approved by Congress as well as following the White House’s desire to reduce emissions.

USPS said it would buy a minimum of 66,000 electric expedition cars through 2028. US Post also committed last July to buy 25,000 new-generation electric expedition cars. It’s even considering buying another 20,000 electric cars.

The US Congress last August awarded $3 billion as part of a $430 billion climate bill to buy electric expedition cars and charging infrastructure.

The White House previously said the US Postal Service or USPS would spend $1.7 billion for charging infrastructure.

In December 2021, US President Joe Biden signed an executive order that the government’s light vehicles would be emission-free by 2027. But the order does not apply to the Postal Service because it is an independent federal agency.

White House Senior Adviser John Podesta said the plan is in line with Biden’s goal of turning the entire US Postal Service’s fleet into electric cars or electric freight forwarders.

“Placing USPS at the forefront of the clean transportation revolution,” said Podesta
