A recent survey by charge point manufacturer GARO reveals that most UK electric vehicle (EV) owners are open to paying extra to reduce charging times. According to the findings, 90% of respondents expressed a willingness to pay more per kilowatt-hour (kWh) if it could cut charging wait times by up to 15 minutes. This preference highlights the growing demand for convenience among EV users.
The survey uncovered regional variations in attitudes, with Cardiff leading in support for faster charging options, where 55% of EV owners would pay more to reduce waiting times. In contrast, the southwest of England showed the lowest interest, with only 17% willing to spend extra. GARO emphasized the role of ultra-fast chargers in addressing these demands, as they can significantly reduce wait times and increase charging station efficiency. While expanding the UKâs charging infrastructure is a priority, GARO noted that ultra-fast chargers could allow more vehicles to benefit from quicker and more convenient charging.
Despite the UKâs progress, with over 60,000 public charge points reported as of April 2024, most of these remain in the slower 3-8 kW range. Industry groups like the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) argue that as many as 2.3 million charge points may be needed by 2030 to support the nationâs expanding EV fleet, far exceeding the governmentâs goal of 300,000.
GAROâs UK e-Mobility Manager, Conor Charnley, noted that the lack of rapid charging solutions is a source of frustration for EV owners. He highlighted the need not only to expand the charging network but also to include faster options that address range anxiety and provide greater convenience for EV drivers.
Additionally, the survey found a strong preference for renewable energy among EV owners, with 82% expressing a preference for green energy sources. This interest is notably higher among younger demographics, with 92% of 25-34-year-olds and 89% of 17-24-year-olds favoring renewable energy for charging, reflecting growing support for sustainable options in EV ownership.
