Ubitricity has completed the installation of 400 new on-street electric vehicle charge points across the London Borough of Bexley, increasing the borough’s public charging network to a total of 500 charge points.

The deployment took place between November 2025 and March 2026, with more than 200 charge points installed during December alone. The new chargers have been integrated into existing street lamp posts, a solution designed to expand charging access without adding additional street furniture.

Lamp Post Charging for Residential Streets

According to Ubitricity, the charge points are retrofitted directly into existing lamp columns and can typically be installed in less than 30 minutes.

The approach is intended to provide convenient charging options for residents who do not have access to private driveways or home charging facilities while minimizing visual impact on public streets.

The company said it will continue to operate, maintain, and manage the charging infrastructure on behalf of the London Borough of Bexley.

Smart Charging Features Included

All newly installed charge points are equipped with Ubitricity’s smart charging software, allowing drivers to schedule charging sessions during periods of lower electricity demand and potentially benefit from reduced energy tariffs.

The technology is designed to support more efficient use of the electricity network while helping EV owners reduce charging costs.

Supporting EV Adoption

“We are proud to work on this project alongside The London Borough of Bexley to expand access to EV charging across the community,” said Stuart Wilson, UK Managing Director of Ubitricity.

“By installing charge points into existing street light infrastructure, we are making it easy for residents to charge right outside their homes, which we hope will further encourage EV adoption across the borough.”

Councillor Cameron Smith, Bexley’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Infrastructure, said the project improves charging accessibility while avoiding additional street clutter.

“These new charging points will make it easier to charge electric vehicles across Bexley with a smart charging option to save money,” Smith said.

“Working in partnership with Ubitricity, the public chargers have been installed in existing lamp columns, meaning no extra street clutter nor charging cables crossing pavements.”

Growing National Network

Ubitricity, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell, said it now operates more than 14,600 public charge points across the United Kingdom, making it one of the country’s largest public EV charging network operators.

The Bexley deployment forms part of broader efforts across London and the UK to expand access to public charging infrastructure as electric vehicle adoption continues to increase, particularly among households without off-street parking.
