Uber has announced a notable increase in the availability of electric vehicles (EVs) on its platform, with over 180,000 electric cars currently bookable worldwide. The ride-hailing company aims to transition to a fully electric fleet by 2040. This update was shared during the ‘Go Get Zero’ event in London, where Uber reported that more than 182,000 electric cars can already be booked through its app.
In London, electric vehicles have made a significant impact, with over 30% of all Uber journeys currently utilizing electric options. The company’s ‘Uber Green’ initiative, which allows riders to choose electric or hybrid cars, is currently available in over 200 cities globally. Uber plans to expand this option to more than 40 additional cities, introducing a variant exclusively for electric vehicle bookings, moving away from hybrid options.
To further promote the use of electric vehicles, Uber has launched a new ‘electric car preference’ feature. This allows passengers to indicate their preference for electric vehicles when booking rides, enhancing their ability to travel emission-free. It is important to note that Uber operates as a platform for independent drivers and contract companies, rather than maintaining its own fleet.
As part of its commitment to electric mobility, Uber is planning a series of EV pop-up events, allowing customers to experience the latest electric vehicles. For instance, passengers in London can test drive the Lotus Eletre, while those in LA, Miami, and Dallas will have the opportunity to ride in the new Rivian R1.
In an effort to facilitate the transition to electric vehicles for its drivers, Uber is implementing several initiatives. These include an EV mentorship program that connects experienced EV drivers with those considering the switch to electric. Additionally, an AI assistant will be integrated into the driver app to provide answers to questions regarding electric vehicles.
Uber has also partnered with Octopus Energy and BYD to provide home charging solutions for drivers in the UK. This collaboration aims to fund 1,000 home chargers, valued at nearly £1,000 each, along with an Octopus tariff that offers the most affordable electric vehicle charging options in the UK.
Recently, Uber entered into a partnership with BYD, a Chinese electric car manufacturer, with the goal of introducing 100,000 BYD vehicles to its platform. This collaboration will offer Uber drivers favorable pricing and financing options when purchasing or leasing a BYD electric vehicle, further enhancing the company’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle fleet.
