Uber Introduces 100 Tesla Model Y Crossovers for Tokyo’s Electrification Program

Uber has recently unveiled its plans to introduce a new electrification program in Tokyo, Japan, as part of its Premium lineup. The initiative will involve the deployment of 100 Tesla Model Y crossovers across the city, aimed at promoting sustainable transportation options.

By November of this year, Uber intends to have 30 Model Ys operating in the Edogawa, Adachi, and Setagaya Wards in Japan’s bustling capital. The ride-hailing giant is collaborating with taxi company Hinomaru Kotsu to deploy the electric vehicles and set up charging stations to ensure seamless operations. With an ambitious timeline, Uber aims to have all 100 Uber Model Ys cruising the streets of Tokyo by the end of 2024.

In a translated press release, Tesla Japan Country Manager, Ryokusai Inoue, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We are also focusing on taxi and hire businesses, mainly in North America, and we are very pleased to be able to realize an initiative of 100 cars in Japan. We believe that Tesla’s vehicles have great benefits not only for customers’ safe movement but also for drivers and business owners. We will continue to experience the charm of Tesla, and we will expand it widely throughout Japan, regardless of corporations or individuals.”

Uber’s translated press release highlighted the selection of the Model Ys due to their impressive attributes, including their cruising range, driving performance, quietness, and premium interior and exterior. It comes as no surprise that the Tesla Model Y currently ranks as the second-best-selling electric vehicle in the United States, affirming Uber’s choice of this environmentally friendly option for its Tokyo fleet.

To facilitate customer accessibility, the electric cabs will be available through a special menu on the Uber app, enabling users to specifically opt for the Tesla Model Y crossover, showcasing Uber’s commitment to providing eco-conscious transportation choices.

Uber’s electrification program launch in Tokyo marks a significant step towards cleaner and greener mobility options in the city. As more companies embrace sustainable practices, this collaboration between Uber and Tesla sets a positive example for promoting environmentally friendly transportation solutions worldwide.
