Spanish public transport operator Tuvisa has ordered five additional ie tram electric buses from Irizar e-mobility, marking the fourth time the Vitoria-Gasteiz operator has selected the Basque manufacturer.
The new order will bring Tuvisa’s total ie tram fleet to 33 vehicles since the partnership began in 2019. The purchase comprises three 18-metre buses and two 12-metre models.
Accessibility Features for Urban Transport
The new buses will incorporate accessibility features designed to accommodate passengers with different mobility needs. These include designated spaces for wheelchair users and passengers with prams, access ramps, Braille elements and areas adapted for people with reduced mobility.
Tuvisa’s relationship with Irizar e-mobility began with an order for 13 ie tram buses, delivered in 2020 to launch Vitoria-Gasteiz’s Electric Intelligent Bus (EIB) system.
The operator subsequently purchased another 10 vehicles, followed by five additional buses that joined the fleet in 2025. The latest order continues the city’s investment in electric public transport.
Fourth Order Extends Long-Standing Partnership
Iñigo Azcona, commercial director of Irizar e-mobility for Spain and Portugal, said the latest purchase reflected the strength of the relationship between the two organisations.
“This new addition is the fourth time they’ve put their trust in Irizar e-mobility, which shows the soundness of a collaboration that started in 2019,”
Azcona also highlighted the local connection between the operator and manufacturer, adding:
“Moreover, it’s especially gratifying to see our ie trams on the road so close to our Aduna plant, where they’re designed and manufactured.”
Production at Irizar’s Aduna Plant
The five buses will be manufactured at Irizar e-mobility’s facility in Aduna, Gipuzkoa, which employs approximately 400 people.
The tram-inspired ie tram is the company’s flagship model, combining the appearance of a light-rail vehicle with the operating format of an electric bus. The additional vehicles will expand Tuvisa’s existing fleet as Vitoria-Gasteiz continues to operate its Electric Intelligent Bus system.
