Autonomous driving technology company TuSimple announced that it has piloted the first autonomous semi-truck on a public road with no human presence in the vehicle and no human intervention.
TuSimple is a company focused on developing autonomous technologies for commercial vehicles. The company was founded in San Diego in 2015, where it is currently headquartered, but also has operations in Arizona, Texas, Europe, and China.
As reported by Techcrunh, the test of the autonomous truck was carried out on the evening of December 22. The total test was carried out for one hour and 20 minutes and ended at the distribution center in Phoenix.
Along the way, the TuSimple Autonomous Driving System (ADS) successfully navigates surface roads, traffic signals and on-highway lanes, according to the company.
The test is also the first time an autonomous truck has operated on a public road.
TuSimple uses technology that allows a 360-degree view of the vehicle’s surroundings over a distance of more than 914.4 meters.
