Toyota announced plans on Tuesday to begin local production of the facelifted bZ4X electric vehicle (EV) in Indonesia, marking the Japanese automaker’s first domestically manufactured EV in the country. The news was revealed during a press conference at the 2025 GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS).

The move comes three years after the company introduced the original bZ4X in Indonesia. By assembling the refreshed bZ4X locally, Toyota aims to support Indonesia’s efforts to accelerate EV adoption and take advantage of favorable government incentives. Under current rules, electric vehicles with at least 40% local content qualify for a reduced value-added tax (VAT) rate of 1%, compared with the standard 11%.

“This initiative not only reflects Toyota’s commitment to providing inclusive mobility solutions, but also contributes to job creation, increased national technology independence, and building a greener future for Indonesia,” said Hiroyuki Ueda, President Director of PT. Toyota Astra Motor (TAM), a 50:50 joint venture between Toyota Motor Corporation and PT. Astra International Tbk.

Toyota has not yet specified the level of local content in the upcoming bZ4X, but the company expects domestic production to help lower prices and improve after-sales service by boosting spare parts availability. According to Indonesia’s state-run news agency Antara, the locally produced model will be offered exclusively in a front-wheel-drive layout starting in late 2025.

Toyota also displayed the Urban Cruiser EV at the show, potentially positioning the small electric SUV for launch shortly after Suzuki’s e-Vitara, which is expected to debut in early 2026.
