Toyota Announces Plans to Assemble Battery Electric SUV in Kentucky by 2025

In a significant move towards electrification, Toyota has announced its intention to manufacture an all-new, three-row, battery electric SUV at its Kentucky plant, with production set to commence in 2025. This will mark the company’s first U.S.-assembled battery electric vehicle (BEV), solidifying Toyota’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and meeting the evolving demands of customers.

To power the new BEV, Toyota will source batteries from its North Carolina facility, which is currently under construction. Recognizing the need for sustainable energy solutions, the company plans to invest an additional $2.1 billion in the battery plant, bringing the total investment in Toyota North Carolina to an impressive $5.9 billion. This investment will not only support the production of batteries for the upcoming BEV but will also contribute to Toyota’s broader ambition of achieving carbon neutrality.

The North Carolina facility will serve as Toyota’s primary hub for developing and manufacturing lithium-ion batteries, catering to the growing demand for electric vehicles. By establishing six battery production lines, four of which will be dedicated to hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and two specifically for BEVs, Toyota aims to ensure the availability of cutting-edge battery technology for its expanding lineup of electrified vehicles.

Ted Ogawa, the President, and CEO of Toyota Motor North America, emphasizes the company’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions while providing customers with diverse options for sustainable transportation. Ogawa states, “We are committed to reducing carbon emissions as much as possible and as soon as possible. To achieve this goal, customers must have access to a portfolio of options that meet their needs now and in the future. It is exciting to see our largest U.S. plant, Toyota Kentucky, and our newest plant, Toyota North Carolina, drive us into the future together with BEV and battery production for our expanding electrified lineup.”

Susan Elkington, President of Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, expresses enthusiasm for Toyota Kentucky’s pivotal role in the company’s electric vehicle endeavors. “Toyota Kentucky set the standard for Toyota vehicle manufacturing in the U.S., and now we’re leading the charge with BEVs,” Elkington asserts. “Our incredible team of Kentuckians is excited to take on this new challenge while delivering the same great quality and reliability that our customers expect.”

Looking ahead, Toyota has set ambitious goals for electrification. By 2025, the company aims to offer an electrified option for every Toyota and Lexus model worldwide, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable transportation and meeting the evolving preferences of customers. With its strategic investments and partnerships, Toyota is well-positioned to contribute to a greener future and further establish itself as a leader in the electric vehicle market.
