Celebrating four decades of automotive excellence, BMW M GmbH unveils the seventh generation of its iconic high-performance saloon, the BMW M5, now equipped with its first-ever electrified drive system. The model-specific M HYBRID system propels the new BMW M5 to unprecedented levels of power, boasting a maximum output of 727 hp and a peak torque of 1,000 Nm.
“The new BMW M5 represents a significant milestone in our pursuit of exhilarating performance combined with cutting-edge technology,” said Markus Flasch, CEO of BMW M GmbH.
Combining a high-revving V8 engine featuring M TwinPower Turbo technology with an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive all-wheel drive, the BMW M5 accelerates from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.5 seconds.
“The electrification of the BMW M5 enhances its dynamic capabilities while retaining the distinctive performance characteristics that define the M brand,” added Flasch.
Visually, the new BMW M5 distinguishes itself with bold wheel arch and side skirt extensions, a sculptural front apron, and a model-specific design around the C-pillar, complete with an embossed “M5” logo. These enhancements underscore its athletic stance and differentiate it from the BMW 5 Series Saloon.
Inside, the luxurious interior is enriched with M-specific features, highlighting the car’s multi-layered character and performance-oriented design.
Production of the new BMW M5 commences at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in July 2024, coinciding with its world premiere at the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed. BMW Retailers are now accepting orders, with the first UK customer deliveries scheduled from November 2024, alongside the debut of the new BMW M5 Touring.
The M HYBRID system integrates a 4.4-liter V8 engine with an electric motor, tailored specifically for the BMW M5. The combustion engine delivers 585 hp and 750 Nm torque, while the electric motor adds 197 hp and 280 Nm torque, boosting effective torque to 450 Nm at the transmission input.
In all-electric mode, the BMW M5 achieves speeds up to 87 mph (140 km/h) with an electric range of 42 – 43 miles (67 – 69 km) (WLTP), setting a new benchmark in its segment. The enhanced M xDrive system offers a rear-biased setup in 4WD Sport mode and a 2WD mode for pure rear-wheel-drive enthusiasts.
“With its blend of electrified power and traditional M performance, the new BMW M5 marks a significant leap forward in automotive engineering,” concluded Flasch.
The BMW M5 is poised to dominate the high-performance saloon market, with North America and Europe anticipated as key sales regions. The United States is expected to lead as the largest individual market, followed closely by the UK, Poland, Germany, South Korea, Japan, and China.
