Tesla’s Giga Shanghai factory is reportedly operating at full capacity once again. This update was shared by Chinese media outlet Jiemian News, which recently toured Tesla’s Shanghai-based Model 3 and Model Y production plant.
Earlier this year, reports suggested that Tesla was reducing the vehicle production output of Giga Shanghai. In late May, Reuters noted that the electric vehicle maker planned to cut at least 20% of the facility’s production between March and June 2024.
While Tesla China remained silent about these reports, new vehicle registrations and exports this year fell below last year’s levels. Now in the third quarter, Tesla appears to be striving to produce and deliver as many cars as possible before the year’s end.
Elon Musk has expressed optimism about this year’s vehicle sales potentially surpassing last year’s figures. Achieving this would require Giga Shanghai to operate at full capacity, which seems to be the current situation. Jiemian News reporters, who visited Giga Shanghai this month, confirmed that Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y factory is running at full capacity.
Giga Shanghai is known for its high levels of automation. The facility’s general assembly features stacked production areas, and since the workshops are connected, finished parts can be moved around efficiently. Giga Shanghai reportedly has a 95% automation rate across the facility, with the welding area being nearly 100% automated.
During the visit, Tesla VP Grace Tao provided updates on the upcoming Shanghai Megafactory. Tao noted that the Megafactory is on track for completion in 2025, according to Sina Finance News. This aligns with recent reports about the facility, which will produce Tesla’s flagship energy product, the Megapack grid-scale battery.
