Tesla reported a rebound in China-made vehicle sales last month, but the figures remained below the levels seen a year earlier, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on Thursday.

The electric vehicle maker’s China sales reached 72,573 vehicles in May, including both domestic sales and exports, representing a 16.74% increase from April’s 62,167 units. However, this figure marked a 6.59% decline from the 77,695 units sold in May last year.

In the January-May period, Tesla China sold a total of 355,616 vehicles, down 7.12% from the 382,859 units sold in the same period last year.

Tesla’s Shanghai factory, which boasts an annual production capacity exceeding 950,000 vehicles, serves as the company’s largest facility worldwide. The plant manufactures the popular Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, catering not only to local consumers but also acting as a significant export hub for Tesla.
