Tesla has introduced changes to the pricing structure of its fast-charging network in Europe, offering new options for drivers of electric vehicles (EVs) from other brands.
The membership fee, which allows non-Tesla EVs to be charged at Superchargers at a reduced rate, has been reduced from €12.99 to €9.99 per month. Additionally, a new annual membership option is now available for €100 per year.
Tesla drivers will continue to enjoy discounted rates per kilowatt-hour and will automatically be treated as members. “With this change, Tesla owners will continue to enjoy a seamless and fully integrated fast-charging experience at lower member prices than non-members, while all other EV drivers will have more options to choose from,” Tesla said in a statement.
Non-Tesla drivers can still charge at Superchargers without a monthly fee but will pay more per kilowatt-hour than Tesla drivers. Prices in Germany range from €0.55 to €0.68 per kWh, depending on the location and time of day. However, with a membership, prices can drop to around €0.42 to €0.51 per kilowatt-hour.
The new pricing structure went into effect on 13 April, allowing all European customers to use the updated membership model. To charge non-Tesla vehicles at Superchargers, drivers of other brands need to use the Tesla app to activate the respective stall, with billing taking place via the payment method stored in the required Tesla account.
Tesla’s Supercharger network in Europe consists of more than 14,000 Superchargers at over 1,100 locations in 30 countries. In Germany alone, there are over 3,600 Superchargers at more than 200 locations, with around 99% accessible to non-Tesla vehicles. The membership could therefore be of interest to non-Tesla drivers, especially those who frequently use the Supercharger network.
Tesla has been adjusting its Supercharger prices regularly, with the latest major price reduction occurring just over a year ago. The kWh costs at the end of 2022 were almost €0.70 but have since been significantly reduced.
