Tesla announced a recall of approximately 239,000 vehicles in the United States due to a potential malfunction in rear-view cameras, marking the latest safety concern for the electric vehicle manufacturer.

The issue arises from a reverse current during vehicle power-up, which could cause a short circuit on the car’s computer board and render the rear-view camera inoperative.

The recall affects certain Model 3, Model S, Model X, and Model Y vehicles, including 2024-25 Model 3 and Model S, as well as 2023-25 Model X and Model Y units.

Tesla attributed the problem to specific software and hardware configurations, exacerbated by colder temperatures. The company has implemented a software update to modify the power-up sequence, preventing the short-circuit failure. Vehicles identified with circuit board issues will have their computer boards replaced if necessary.

The recall comes days after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration initiated a probe into 2.6 million Tesla vehicles over incidents involving a remote movement feature.

Tesla reported 887 warranty claims and 68 field reports related to the camera issue but stated no known crashes, injuries, or fatalities have been linked to the defect.

Tesla, which has the highest number of recalls in the U.S., affecting 5.1 million vehicles, often addresses these issues through over-the-air software updates. Electrical system recalls surged in 2024, impacting 6.3 million vehicles, as noted by recall management firm Bizzycar, reflecting the complexities introduced by advanced vehicle technologies.
