Tesla Recalls 137 Model Y Electric SUVs Over Steering Wheel Concerns

Tesla has recently announced a voluntary recall of a limited number of Model Y SUVs. The recall is prompted by concerns that the steering wheels in these vehicles may not have been adequately fastened, potentially resulting in the steering wheel disconnecting while the vehicle is in operation. The decision to recall the affected vehicles follows an investigation launched by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) after receiving reports of the steering wheels detaching from two newly delivered Model Ys.

Tesla’s official notice, as published on the NHTSA website, states that only 137 Model Ys are included in the recall. The company estimates that approximately 10% of these vehicles, or around 14 units, may be affected by the issue. Tesla identified the problem on May 4, 2023, noting that a loose fastener could cause the steering wheel to disconnect from the steering column.

The notice further explains that certain manufacturing records indicate a possible correlation between specific characteristics and the improper installation of the fastener without proper torqueing. Failing to torque the fastener to the required specifications could lead to the steering wheel disconnecting from the steering column.

While the recall highlights the risk of potential steering control loss and an increased chance of a collision, it is important to note that this particular issue differs from the one that prompted the earlier ODI investigation. Tesla clarifies that they have not received any reports of the steering wheel completely detaching from the steering column due to the current condition.

The key distinction lies in the fastener itself. The previous investigation, initiated in March, examined cases where Model Ys were delivered without the fastener that connects the steering wheel to the steering column. However, in this recall, the fastener is present but not properly torqued.

Addressing the concern, Tesla Service will conduct inspections on the fasteners. If an improper torque is identified, the automaker will replace the fastener and ensure it is torqued correctly according to specifications.
